The Gladstone IOM World Championship was a truly magnificent event with some of the best live streaming and commentary we have ever seen with all available on You tube. If only my sailing matched up to the delivery of the worlds media team, I would’ve been a winner through and through. As it happens. I sailed badly made poor decisions and suffered from two items of gear failure which should never have happened. But on the plus side I got to see a microcosm of Queensland over the following 3 weeks and created a ton of material for the blog. It would be so boring if I had won.
It was interesting unpacking the events as they unfolded. The video taken by the Gladstone team provides so much opportunity for learning about racing IOM's. For example, as a competitor, I could see how I performed, how my rig was set up and learn what to do and what not to do in future. As a designer one can see slow motion videos of how each design moves through the choppy water such is the quality of the videos.
I’ve broken down the analysis as follows:
Trends in hull design
Trends in rig set up
Where did I go so wrong race by race.
What have I learned
What makes a great championship
A final summary
On the one hand I could be accused of being an anorac before my brother says it but on the other hand, being able to go back over the races really shows the areas on needs to improve to be a better sailor. I hope this review proves of some benefit to anyone who reads it.
The blogs will appear over the next few days.
