The Alioth story continued

There was one annoying feature of my Alioth setup in that the fin was raked back noticably compared to other boats so I could achieve balance. I wanted the leading edge to be near perpendicular to the waterline. The only trouble was, to do that I had to move the top back 4mm and the tip forward 4 mm which would give me 0.5 degrees of rake which would be good enough.

I filled the existing bolt hole and screw slot at the top of the fin with Isopon car body filler. The nice thing about Isopon is it dries quickly, sands easily and sets hard. Then I shaved a 2mm off the trailing edge and built up the leading edge with Isopon applying a slight rake correction to get the fin vertical and then drilled a new bolt hole. The result, perfect fin rake of 0.5 degree. When I tested in club racing, the boat was perfectly balanced and performed well.

That finished the changes to the hull appendages. Now I just need to bed in the new rigs and sails for the worlds.

Its been a long journey over several months but a great learning curve for me which would not have happened if I had a standard production boat. Perhaps a Venti would be a better call but I am up to the challenge to prove that Juan's 3d printed design is a match for the Venti, V series, VISS, Kantun etc. There is only on way to find our and that is to race against the best in the world.

The next test is not until the ranking event in September just before i depart for foreign lands.
