Racing this weekend

Having done lots of testing on the new IOM design, it is time to get the DF's out of the cupboard for the UK TT circuit and some great racing. Tomorrow is the turn of the DF65 which is the smallest boat I have ever sailed and should be supplied with a magnifying glass so you can see it on the water. Or is it just my age. It is a tricky boat to sail and set up but tonight I set up the 4 rigs to check all was OK with a glass of wine or 2. I have not sailed the boat since the last TT so it should be interesting. On sunday we get the DF95 out which is a little more like an IOM. There is a great fleet coming to race in extremely cold conditions. A NE wind is forecast for the weekend which is a great direction for Southport.

Southport is a venue I know well. When I was younger, I sailed a number of 24 hour races for Frensham Pond and we even won first Enterprise (5th overall) in the event which was no mean achievement. I seem to remember sailing from 0500 to 1400 to unlap our leader and then catch them on port and starboard which dispatched them to an also ran position. In another event, I remember sailing at night in a NE wind at 20-30 mph and runnng downwind having to gybe for one of the Islands. Scary. Have a look as the weather picture for this weekend and you will see what I mean. Great days. As well as the 24 hour race Frensham qualified for the National Team racing finals. A unique opportunity to race with my brother. We did not do as well as expected but did get through to the knock outs.

So happy memories for a wonderful venue. Southport is a breeding ground of some great sailors. Ian Southworth comes to mind. It is going to be a great weekend. We sail between the southern Island and the north shore. Perfect location and perfect breeze.

Whats my objective for the weekend. Stay out of trouble and get off the start lines with ease.

Wherever you are have some great racing
