Gladstone

On Sunday I had the pleasure to sail with the Gladstone radio sailing club. Such a friendly bunch and very good sailors. The venue is one of the best I have sailed at with open water, chop, wind shifts, oh and did I mention the warm weather and sunshine

The worlds team will be providing pictures of the preparation so I won’t steal their thunder but I think we are in for an amazing championship given what I have seen so far.

In the time I have been here, I took the time to see some of the tourist sites. One of them is a look out post where you can see all the industry laid out across the harbour with information boards pointing to LNG plant, coal terminal, alumina and aluminium production, power station, mining explosive manufacture and much more. One of the benefits of all this industry is they invest in the local community with boardwalks and parks which adds a lot of interest to the town.

On my walk back from the lookout, I stared into the bush for a bit and was lucky enough to see 4 kangaroos lying in the sun. I thought they had been shot at first as they were lying at funny angles but thankfully they started moving.

People are very friendly here. I have met several strangers and struck up conversations. One was a 93 year old who lives on his own, had all his faculties and had sadly lost his wife to the big C in 1985. He had such wonderful stories. Another gentleman I met talked about fishing on the barrier reef. You never know who you will meet when you travel.

So far the experience has been great in Gladstone and will only get better as the worlds approaches.

Tomorrow I will head to the botanical gardens.
